Social Skills Groups for Children

This Social Skills Group for children ages 8-10 is offered through Jewish Family Services Ottawa. It is a small, specialized group program designed to help your child grow in a number of key areas:
* Breaking down barriers in making friends and socializing
* Conflict resolution strategies
* Anxiety and stress-reduction techniques
* Engaged listening and problem-solving skills
* Recognizing and managing emotions
* Enhancing self-esteem, assertiveness and confidence
* Self-care and coping
In addition to these important skills, it provides you with a unique opportunity to connect with your child and learn more about their thoughts and feelings.
The program is based on the principles of Play Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness and is facilitated by a child and family counsellor with expertise in social-emotional development. It is designed to assist children with a variety of challenges including difficulty with peers, anxiety, emotional regulation and impulsiveness.
Our next group begins Tuesday October 29, 2019 and concludes Tuesday December 10, 2019. It runs on Tuesday nights from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm.
Cost: $290 (covered under many extended health plans).

Syrian Refugees and Mental Health: Training, Case Conferencing and Counselling/Jewish Family Services(JFS) (English)

Settlement workers, Sponsors, ESL Teachers, Volunteers, and Interpreters have been the front line support for Syrian Refugees. As the main source of support and guidance we are well aware of the many challenges they have experienced in identifying mental health related issues offering and accessing mental health services. To support the Settlement sector and those who are working directly with Syrian Refugees, Jewish Family Services is offering a free training workshop, case conferencing meetings and direct referrals to Arabic speaking counsellors with the aim of improving mental wellness and quality of care of the Syrian Refugees.
Arabic and English counseling is also available for front-line workers if they are experiencing difficult or hard to serve cases or feel the need to speak to someone. On demand phone consultations with JFS mental health team is also available to offer support in case of a crisis situation requiring additional assistance.

- Impact of the migration journey on well-being
- Syrian refugees’ mental health struggles: Signs and Symptoms of emotional distress
- How to help
- Self-care strategies and tools to ensure the well-being of settlement workers.
