Un foyer de groupe est habituellement une maison qui offre à une population spécifique un environnement supervisé pour des enfants et jeunes pris en charge qui ont des handicaps du développement ou physiques, des personnes qui se remettent de problèmes d'abus de drogue, des mères célibataires ou victimes de violence domestique.
